Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 750 ml red wine (such as Merlot)
  • 1 whole orange zested, then peeled and segmented
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 3 sticks cinnamon sticks
  • 1 inch fresh ginger root thinly sliced
  • 0.5 cup Maker's Mark Bourbon
  • 0.25 cup honey or to taste, optional

Method

Slow Cooker Method
  1. Combine all ingredients in a 3 to 4-quart slow cooker pot.
  2. Stir and cover with a lid.
  3. Cook on LOW for 1 to 2 hours.
  4. Remove the lid and stir. Taste and adjust with the sweetener, if needed.
  5. Ladle the mulled wine into mugs without the spices. Garnish with a slice of orange, rosemary sprig, and/or cinnamon sticks, and serve.
  6. After you remove the lid, leave the slow cooker on the Warm setting while serving.
Stovetop Method
  1. Combine the ingredients in a Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed cooking pot and set it over medium heat.
  2. When the wine comes to a simmer, turn the heat down to as low as it will go.
  3. Cover, and let the wine simmer for at least 15 minutes or up to an hour.
  4. Using a fine mesh strainer, remove and discard the orange slices and spices. Give the mulled wine a taste, and stir in extra sweetener if needed.
  5. Serve it warm in heatproof glasses or mugs and top with garnishes.

Notes

For best flavor, allow the spices to steep in the wine for at least an hour. You can adjust the amount of honey to your preference. Serve warm and enjoy!
